Final Cat Hook Model

Image
After the creation of the concept model for the cat-shaped hook, I created a new model with 3D printing in mind, basically refining the previous model, polishing some rough edges and scaling it accordingly. The first model was actually miniscule for some reason, so the first thing I did was scale it to fit how I wanted the size of the final print to be in real life. Then, I worked on reshaping the tail and aligning certain parts of the body, using some surface modeling in the process. I made a second hole on the back so that the hook could be better attached to walls, and also changed the shape of the hole itself so that a screw could better fit through it and support the model. Through surface modeling, I accidentally created a gap in the middle of the new model, so I fixed that too. After the model was finished, I separated the whiskers from the body so that no support materials would be needed in order to print them. Instead, I planned on gluing them to the body after the print was ...

Refined Hook Concept

After hearing the feedback for my hook concepts, I summed up the scores and divided them by the number of entries to get the average of each. Here are the results:   Concept 1: Group Score -  16.1 Individual Score - 15 Concept 2: Group Score - 17 Individual Score - 16 Concept 3: Group Score -  17.5 Individual Score - 17 Concept 4: Group Score -  17.6 Individual Score - 18 Concept 5:  Group Score -  14 Individual Score - 12 Concept 6: Group Score -  15.6 Individual Score - 14 This is the final ranking of the concepts based on the group feedback:  1st - Concept 4 2nd - Concept 3 3rd - Concept 2 4th -  Concept 1 5th - Concept 6 6th - Concept 5 Based on my own personal opinion, here is an alternative ranking of the concepts: 1st -  Concept 4 2nd -  Concept 3 3rd -  Concept 2 4th -   Concept 1 5th -  Concept 6 6th -  Concept 5 With this in mind, I've decided to further elaborate and refine the fourth co...

Coat Hook Concepts

Image
Concept 1: For this concept, I had to add more details in comparison to the other ones, as it is more difficult to understand on paper. I also made a second, more complex version (shown at the top right of the image). I was going for something following a checkered retro style, and ended up adding some extra parts in order to give it structure and actually connect all of its parts. Due to it being hollow on the back (as illustrated), it would be easy to hang on a wall. Concept 2: For this concept, I went for something playful, and can be used both as decoration and a hook. Perhaps it could even be placed next to an umbrella stand! I also experimented with different cover lengths, as seen above. Lastly, I added a hollow space on the back of the umbrella handle in order for it to be easily hung on a wall. Concept 3: For this concept, I was going for something minimalistic. Something that Gary Hustwit's film (Objectified) argues that is key in design, is for the design itself to not ...

Hollow Object Final Model

Image
With the feedback I received from my last post, I came to the conclusion that the two best concepts, both creatively and practically, are the first and fifth concepts. Here are their visuals: First concept: Fifth Concept: As their color schemes go together, I decided not to alter them. After merging the concepts and doing some adjustments, here is the result: Render Previews: Final Renders: I rescaled most of the first model and kept the fifth one mostly unaltered. I also rearranged the "tentacles" in a way that they'll print a lot better, and deleted some of them due to visual pollution. Lastly, I rescaled the entire model in order for it to fit better and take advantage of the space that the pinter provides. Here is the model in Prusa Slic3r: For general settings, it was set to 0.2 mm speed, generic PLA filament, and all of the settings from spiral vase toggled on (in order to make the printed object hollow). The printer used was the Prusa Mini with a 0.4mm nozzle. As ...

Hollow Object Concepts

Image
The idea was to create 6 concepts of hollow models in Rhino that can stand on their own as objects (if 3D printed). First Object: For this model, I experimented with the twist and bend commands. While trying to keep in mind that horizontal surfaces can't be printed, I made the top pointy. In the end, this model somehow reminds me of the castle from the movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Second Object: For this model, I tried to create something very symmetrical using pyramids and squares. In the end, it looks like some sort of weird pencil. For this model there were some struggles, as I couldn't seem to rotate the pyramids in a way that perfectly aligned with the other edges and intersections. To fix this, I had to keep toggling Object Snaps on and off until they were in decent places. The precision was lost, but I don't think it's a big issue since this is only a prototype. Third Object: For this model, I went with a simple, robust design that seems easy to 3D print. The...
